Himalayan Cutia

The Himalayan Cutia (*Cutia nipalensis*) is a true gem of the eastern Himalayas, with its vivid plumage and engaging behavior. I recently captured an image of this colorful bird in Mangan, Sikkim, where the vibrant forests and cool climate provide the ideal setting for this captivating species.

The Himalayan Cutia is visually striking, with a mosaic of colors: its upper body displays a mix of blue, black, and orange patterns, while the underparts are a softer grayish tone. The intricate design on its wings, with a blend of bold stripes and spots, sets it apart as one of the most beautiful birds of the region. This species typically moves in small, active groups, often chattering softly while they search for insects along tree trunks and branches, much like a nuthatch.

Observing the Himalayan Cutia in its natural habitat was an unforgettable experience, as it offered a glimpse into the hidden diversity of Sikkim’s birdlife. The cutia’s bright colors and lively presence add a touch of vibrancy to the tranquil mountain forests, embodying the region’s richness and allure for bird enthusiasts.
