Raja Ji Tiger Reserve- An opportunity to witness bold leopards

Raja Ji Tiger Reserve: An Opportunity to see Bold Leopards

Located in the foothills of the Shivalik range, Rajaji Tiger Reserve is a short drive from Delhi, making it a perfect weekend wildlife getaway. While it is officially a tiger reserve, Rajaji’s real charm lies in its bold and frequently seen leopards, which offer incredible photography and wildlife-watching opportunities.

Unlike other parks where tigers steal the limelight, Rajaji is where leopards confidently walk the roads, rest on open tracks, and even pose on riverbeds. With fewer crowds than more famous national parks, it offers a raw and immersive jungle experience, especially in the Chilawali Range, accessed via the Mohand Gate.

History of Rajaji Tiger Reserve

Rajaji Tiger Reserve is named after C. Rajagopalachari, who was the last Governor-General of India and a prominent freedom fighter. The park was established in 1983 by merging three wildlife sanctuaries—Rajaji, Motichur, and Chilla—to form a single protected area for conservation. Today, it stands as one of India’s most scenic and biodiverse reserves, playing a crucial role in wildlife protection and eco-tourism.

Reaching Rajaji Tiger Reserve

Rajaji is well-connected by road, rail, and air:

  • By Road: Approximately 4–5 hours drive from Delhi.

  • By Train: Nearest railway station – Dehradun Railway Station.

  • By Air: Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (just an hour’s drive away).

The Land of Leopards: A Wildlife Haven

While Rajaji is officially a tiger reserve, tiger sightings are rare compared to other parks. Instead, leopards rule the landscape. Unlike in most reserves where leopards are elusive, here they are bold and confident, often seen:
✅ Resting in the middle of safari tracks
✅ Walking head-on towards vehicles
✅ Sitting on trees or relaxing on large boulders
✅ Drinking water at man-made waterholes
✅ Hunting or stalking prey in the dry grasslands

Famous Big Cats of Rajaji

The reserve is home to some well-known big cats, including Heera, Panna, Maya, Laila, and Diana.
