FIELD JOURNAL

Kaladhungi to Munsiyari Birding – April 2025

From the forests of Kaladhungi to the alpine meadows of Khaliya Top, this birding journey delivered exceptional encounters with Himalayan pheasants, woodpeckers, raptors and high-altitude specialists across some of Uttarakhand’s most rewarding birding habitats.

From the Foothills to the High Himalayas

Uttarakhand offers one of the most dramatic birding gradients in India. Within a single journey, birders can move from the warm forests of the Himalayan foothills to alpine slopes overlooking snow-capped peaks. This remarkable diversity of habitat was the inspiration behind our April 2025 exploratory birding journey from Kaladhungi to Munsiyari.

The primary objective of the trip was to evaluate Khaliya Top as a future World of Wild destination for birders and photographers. Having visited Munsiyari several times before, we already knew the region held tremendous promise. However, this journey confirmed that the route deserved a permanent place within our Himalayan birding portfolio.

Birding in Kaladhungi

Our journey began in the forests of Kaladhungi near Ramnagar. Located at the base of the Himalayas, this region combines sal forest, mixed woodland and riverine habitat, creating ideal conditions for a wide variety of birds.

One of the major highlights was the Great Slaty Woodpecker. This impressive species remains one of the most sought-after woodpeckers in northern India, and we were fortunate to enjoy excellent views and photographic opportunities.

The forests also produced memorable sightings of Common Green Magpie, Jungle Owlet, Brown Boobook, Himalayan Prinia, Common Rosefinch, Gray-capped Pygmy Woodpecker, Bar-winged Flycatcher-shrike, Shikra and Indian Paradise Flycatcher.

The Road to Munsiyari

After completing our time in Kaladhungi, we began the long but scenic drive towards Munsiyari. Dense foothill forests gradually gave way to steep valleys, mountain villages and expansive views of the higher Himalayas. Every increase in altitude brought new habitats and new possibilities.

By the time we reached Munsiyari, the towering peaks of the Panchachuli range provided a dramatic backdrop to the birding that lay ahead.

Khaliya Top and the Pheasants

For many Himalayan birders, pheasants represent the ultimate challenge. Beautiful, elusive and often secretive, they require patience, persistence and a degree of luck.

Khaliya Top delivered.

One of the most memorable moments of the journey came when we encountered a pair of Satyr Tragopans moving through dense rhododendron cover. The rich colours of the male contrasted beautifully against the mountain vegetation, creating one of the most rewarding sightings of the tour.

The excitement continued when calling Cheer Pheasants were located along open mountain ridges. Observing these birds in their natural habitat, against a backdrop of Himalayan peaks, was a powerful reminder of why high-altitude birding remains such a special experience.

Life Above the Tree Line

The higher elevations around Khaliya Top continued to surprise us. Himalayan Monals appeared on grassy slopes during the early morning hours, their iridescent plumage glowing in the mountain light.

Above the meadows, Bearded Vultures drifted effortlessly along the ridgelines, while a Mountain Hawk-Eagle provided an unexpected but welcome raptor encounter.

The combination of alpine meadows, rhododendron forests and rocky slopes created a constantly changing environment where every scan of the landscape revealed something new.

Birds of the Himalayan Forest

Beyond the headline species, the forests around Munsiyari produced an excellent variety of Himalayan birds. Grey-crested Tit and Green-tailed Sunbird were among the most photogenic species encountered during the journey.

Other notable sightings included Spotted Laughingthrush, Hill Partridge, White-throated Fulvetta, Black-throated Tit and Little Forktail.

Woodpecker diversity was particularly impressive, with Scaly-bellied, Himalayan and Brown-fronted Woodpeckers all recorded during the journey.

Reflections from Munsiyari

While bird lists are important, the true value of this journey extended beyond the number of species recorded. The experience of trekking through rhododendron forests, waiting quietly along mountain trails and watching clouds drift beneath the Himalayan peaks created memories that cannot be measured by checklists alone.

The image that remains strongest is undoubtedly the sight of a Satyr Tragopan emerging briefly from dense cover before disappearing back into the forest. Moments later, the distant calls of Cheer Pheasants echoed across the valley.

This exploratory journey confirmed what we had long suspected. The Kaladhungi–Munsiyari route offers a remarkable combination of lowland forest birding and high-altitude Himalayan specialties, making it one of the most exciting birding itineraries in Uttarakhand.
