FIELD JOURNAL

Dudhwa Safari – April 2025

Six safaris across the grasslands and forests of Dudhwa National Park delivered exceptional wildlife encounters, including five tiger sightings, Indian Rhinoceros, leopard, jackal and more than 25 bird species in one of North India’s most unique wildlife landscapes.

Into the Terai

Stretching along the Indo-Nepal border, Dudhwa National Park protects one of the finest remaining examples of the Terai ecosystem. Vast grasslands, dense forests, seasonal wetlands and riverine habitats combine to create an extraordinary landscape that supports a remarkable diversity of wildlife.

Between 17th and 20th April 2025, our group of four wildlife enthusiasts explored the reserve through six safaris, eager to experience one of India’s most underrated wildlife destinations.

Unlike many of the country’s more famous tiger reserves, Dudhwa offers something truly special. It is one of the few places in India where visitors have the opportunity to see both Tigers and Indian Rhinoceros within the same landscape.

Land of Tigers and Rhinos

Many wildlife travellers are surprised to learn that One-horned Rhinoceros can be seen in North India. While Kaziranga often receives most of the attention, Dudhwa has its own thriving rhino population that forms an important part of the reserve’s conservation story.

One of the highlights of the safari was spending time observing these magnificent animals in their natural habitat. Their prehistoric appearance and calm confidence make every encounter memorable.

The combination of rhinos grazing through grasslands while tiger tracks crisscross nearby trails creates a wildlife experience unlike anywhere else in North India.

Five Tigers in Four Days

Dudhwa rewarded us with outstanding tiger sightings throughout the tour. Across six safaris, we recorded five separate tiger encounters, a remarkable result in a landscape where wildlife viewing often feels more natural and less crowded than many of India’s popular reserves.

Each sighting carried its own excitement. Some encounters were brief glimpses as a tiger disappeared into tall grass, while others allowed us extended views of these magnificent predators moving confidently through their territory.

One particularly memorable sighting involved a tiger resting peacefully beside the track, completely at ease in the presence of our vehicle. Moments like these provide a rare opportunity to appreciate the power, beauty and confidence of India’s national animal.

The diversity of habitats within Dudhwa ensures that every tiger sighting feels unique. Tall elephant grass, dense forest patches and open clearings create constantly changing conditions that make each encounter different from the last.

Life in the Terai

While tigers and rhinos often dominate attention, Dudhwa’s ecosystem supports an impressive variety of mammals.

Throughout the safari, we regularly encountered deer moving through grasslands and forest edges. Their presence forms the foundation of the predator-prey relationships that sustain the reserve’s large carnivores.

Jackals were observed patrolling open areas and tracks, constantly alert for opportunities. We were also fortunate to record a leopard sighting, adding another exciting predator to the trip list.

These encounters served as a reminder that Dudhwa is not simply a tiger destination. It is a complete ecosystem where every species plays an important role.

Birds of the Grasslands

The rich mosaic of grasslands, wetlands and forests supports an impressive variety of birdlife. During the tour, we recorded more than 25 bird species, adding another dimension to the safari experience.

From raptors scanning the landscape to colourful woodland species and wetland birds, bird activity remained constant throughout the journey. The abundance of birdlife ensured that every safari offered something new to observe, even during quieter wildlife periods.

For wildlife photographers and nature enthusiasts alike, Dudhwa’s bird diversity provides excellent opportunities beyond the larger mammals that often capture the spotlight.

Reflections from Dudhwa

What makes Dudhwa special is not simply the number of species present but the feeling of exploring a truly wild landscape.

The vast grasslands, dense forests and relatively low visitor pressure create an atmosphere that feels refreshingly different from many of India’s better-known parks.

Five tiger sightings, rhino encounters, leopard, jackals and abundant birdlife made this a highly successful safari. Yet perhaps the strongest memory remains the simple realization that such a rich wildlife experience still exists within the Terai forests of North India.

Dudhwa continues to reward visitors who seek authentic wilderness experiences and deserves far greater recognition among wildlife travellers.
